The first bearded girl becomes a model thanks to valuable content in her social media

15 August, 2016

In this post we want to explain and stand out how new media is demanding new qualities to everyone, the content we share daily in our social media needs to be more valuable each time. This is because we are getting more selective about the information we want to see and share with our connections, which is good because is making people curate content to see what is really adding value to their lives. That’s why storytelling works very good.

This is the story of an Indian girl who became super famous in social media, especially on Instagram because she has a beard… yes, a real beard.

Her name is Harnaam Kaur, she is a 25 years old girl who was born with a syndrome called polycystic ovary, which makes hair appear in body parts that as a girl shouldn’t appear, like the beard or hair in her chest.

Harnaam didn’t look like that all her life. She was a normal girl until at the age of 11 the hair in her chest started to grow, was when her family discovered she had the polycystic ovary syndrome. Due to all the social pressure and beauty standards of beauty in the world, she always thought that she would never look like the other girls and she would never be able to be a catwalk model which was her dream. She tried to commit suicidal attempts several times because all the bullying and threats people made.

After this huge fight against negative people, she finally discovered that being different was okay and started to love herself just the way she was.

Thanks to social media she could spread her message to more people, because she knew that out there were others who, like her at the beginning, were hiding.
This campaign “My body, my rules” reflects the reason why she decided to keep her beard and hairy chest instead of “be normal” and go through some treatment.

The social media campaign became so powerful thanks to the valuable content she was sharing, a love story with a positive message, reminding to all of us that nobody is perfect and how beauty standards should be left behind.
This love message reached too many people, one of them was the famous celebrity jewelry designer Marianna Harutunian, who has created pieces for Beyoncé, Lady GaGa, Madonna, Disney, and others. She contacted Harnaam to model some of her pieces, not only on the runway, also in a photo shoot, joining the cause Harnaam created inviting people to love themselves first.

Social media is a helper for anyone who has a strong and positive message concerned for changing the world we live in, these platforms are the ones that can connect people, and like Harnaam, make dreams come true.

Before you launch any campaign in social media, ask how valuable is the content you’re planning to share, measure what kind of impact could have in others and if that impact is the same than the objective of your campaign spread it to the world.

You have to know that social media could be either viral or could be a very slow construction thing. Create your own content and let everyone know what are you doing to make a change, that’s what we all want to see.
