We would like to start this post by letting you know that it doesn’t matter if you have a company or not, branding is not only for companies. As a person, you also do branding, personal branding, and no, this is not exclusive to famous people. When you go on a first date, the success of this first date will determine if you’re going to have a second one; why? The things you express about yourself are what captivate the other person.
If we take all this charm into social media, we can say that “you are what you post.” All the pictures, quotes, everything that you share, it gives people a good idea of who you are.
But what about when we lie on social media? We’ve always had this social pressure, with too many expectations of how we should and shouldn’t be. Judging is a unique and exclusive activity from humans; we want to judge others, but don’t want to be judged ourselves, which is impossible — especially in the digital world we live in.
Thanks to social media, we’re able to connect with others in a different way, but we are also able to get to know others just based on what they share on their social platforms. This is why it’s so important to remember, next time you want to share something, share something real, because sooner or later someone will find out the truth, and the immediacy of information in social media can be cruel.
A clear example of perfect personal branding, without lies, is Behati Prinsloo, Adam Levine’s wife. She, as a famous Victoria’s Secret model, uses her social media to stay close to her fans, showing what one day in the life of Behati is like.
Even Miley Cyrus is real in social media!
No need for fake appearance.
An example of how social media is lying to us is Essena O’Neill. She was an Instagram star who stopped lying to her followers. With more than 777,000 Instagram followers and nearly 270,000 YouTube subscribers. The teenager Essena O’Neill thought she had everything she ever wanted, showing the image of a perfect life and a perfect body.
Then she realized that she was so obsessed with being popular on social media that she forgot the most important thing: being who she really is. She launched a new website to “promote veganism, plant-based nutrition, environmental awareness, social issues, gender equality and controversial art.
We can say that the tendency on social media is being honest, being real, and using social media to make a positive change in others. So be creative about how the honesty of yourself as a personal brand can actually change other people’s lives.
Show what you really stand for, that’s what social media is for, freedom of speech. If you’re constantly lying about what you really like, places you’ve never been, or even saying that you support a cause when you don’t, besides making you look like a liar, it will make you look like a hypocrite.
So please, don’t lie on social media, stay truthful, and keep doing #BRAIN_DING!
Let’s do #BRAIN_DING!
