Have you noticed that several products we use are called by a brand name?
This is because the name, in many cases, was a small chance very favorable.
That was what happened with Ping-Pong. It all started from a physical activity in open fields simulating a game of tennis. It became popular in the Victorian upper class in the XIX century in India and South Africa. The practice of this activity became really popular, and they decided to move to the garden of their properties or even the dining table, using books to improvise the network or “blade.”
There have been a few changes since its origin and its popularity only manifested itself in Europe at first, but when the practice became known in other places the elements to play began to be improved.
The “foam rubber paddle” was invented in Japan, creating the game we know today.
In 1988 it was accepted as an official Olympic sport.
The correct way to refer to this game should be Table Tennis, but it was much commercial acceptance for the other name that they registered it in 1901 as Ping-Pong, because it was the onomatopoeia of the ball bouncing on the table.
When we are going to select a brand name for a product or service there are several things to consider, like the meaning of the word for varied listeners, that the name is easy to remember, among other things… or in this case a catchy name that pays tribute to the noise of the impact.
